Outreach Season is Back!

by Mark Savan - Executive Director

Our move back to in-person outreach events last year was very successful and we are looking to build on this success with an even busier 2024-25 season.  We can tailor sessions to meet the needs of a wide range of audiences, but our typical presentation takes from 60-90 minutes with a 30-minute presentation and plenty of time for questions and discussion.

We already have several early fall events planned

  • Oro Valley September 18th – Mary Ganapol represented AZELO at Death over Drafts
  • Flagstaff October 5th – AZELO Medical Director Evan Pulvers, M.D., and AZELO Volunteer Tina Johnson will be at the Democracy Fair on the NAU campus
  • Sun City November 6 – AZELO Volunteer Tim Sommerville and I will be presenting at the Sun City Lions Club
  • Sun City Grand November 7 – AZELO Volunteer Bill Rodgers and I will be presenting at Grand Learning

Outreach events are a great way for us to fulfil our mission to educate the public about End-of-Life options and Medical Aid in Dying and we are looking for your help in continuing to grow our event schedule.  Ideally, events would have a minimum of 20 participants, provide a suitable room for the event, and have equipment to be able to display a presentation to the audience.  Please click on this link to send me an email if you have a potential outreach event for us.  I’ll make a special appeal to those of you in Flagstaff and Prescott – outreach events are a great way for us to add to the fantastic list of supporters that we have in those markets.

Similarly, many other events offer “tabling” opportunities.  If you would like to represent AZELO at a suitable event, please contact us by clicking here.  We can provide a “tabling kit” that consists of table-top signage; informational flyers; and business

cards for suitable events.

MAID in the Popular Press

In the latest example of a continuing trend, issues and considerations surrounding Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) have recently appeared in widely read publications and news outlets. The latest news story concerns the police detention of several people in Switzerland who are alleged to have been involved with a death that employed a device
called a “Sarco Pod”.

On one hand – under the philosophy of “there is no such thing as bad publicity” – developments like this one help to promote discussion of End-of-Life (EOL) options and invite people to think about a topic that is often avoided. The potential downside is perpetuation of mistruths and fearmongering that provide easy “talking points” for those who either don’t fully understand the issues or are being purposefully deceptive.

In support of our mission to educate and inform about end-of-life options, we’ve provided links to articles that cover the latest developments and related issues. Click on the underlined links below to access the articles:

More End of Life News from Around the US

As more terminally ill patients face the burdens of traveling to states like Vermont and Oregon, the need for broader legal access becomes ever more urgent. New Jersey’s recent discussions on residency restrictions highlight the complexities of such laws, while Delaware and Maryland continue to struggle with passing their own Medical Aid in Dying bills. These stories shed light on the ongoing challenges and progress in ensuring compassionate end-of-life options nationwide.
