Challenges of a New Year

by The AZELO Support Team

Every New Year brings challenges and opportunities, and we look forward to tackling all of those. We will continue our mission to educate Arizonans on MAID and advocating with our elected officials to support this important body-autonomy legislation.

We begin by recognizing the amazing skills and leadership that Mark Savan has brought to this organization over the past few years. His dedication, persistence and organizational acumen has had a huge positive effect on our community outreach and our entire team. Sadly, we must announce that Mark has decided to concentrate on other philanthropic endeavors. He has stepped down as our Executive Director. We pass along his message to all of you.

“I remain a supporter of the organization and an advocate for our joint cause. It has been my pleasure to have led this organization over the past several years and I have enjoyed meeting and developing relationships with many of you. I hope you remain engaged with the organization as it continues to educate and advocate for End of Life Options in our beautiful state.“ - M. Savan

The team will sorely miss Mark’s enthusiasm and drive. We now begin the process of looking for new members of our leadership team. Please bear with us while we review our publishing calendar and events planning mission during this transition period. We welcome any
interested newcomers to help bolster the team, Please contact
support@azendoflifeoptions.org for any inquiries.

Call Out to AZELO Supporters!

by Mary Ganapol, Southern AZ Lead

Dear Supporters of MAID in Arizona,

We are happy to report Two MAID Bills have been sponsored and co-sponsored and await assignment to a House committee this session!

The legislators who have submitted the bills are on the right side of this issue: the last Arizona survey in 2022 showed 60% of registered voters from various demographics were somewhat or strongly in favor of a MAID bill.

Are you on the Request to Speak (RTS) system? If not, see below for an explanation. Even though these bills have not yet been assigned to a committee, you can still add your opinion on the RTS system under “My Bill Position.”

For information about the bills:

For HB2243:
https://apps.azleg.gov/BillStatus/BillOverview/81988

For SB1404:
https://apps.azleg.gov/BillStatus/BillOverview/82809

There is a menu on each of these pages for more information such as Bill Status or Ducuments (copies of the bills in PDF or HTM format).

For more information, see “proposed law” on our website: https://azendoflifeoptions.org/

Of course, our two national partners are following the progress in Arizona closely. For various links and updates on the Compassion and Choices website see:

Request To Speak, Explained

If you aren’t familiar with Request to Speak, or RTS, you can sign up for it on the website of the website of Civic Engagement Beyond Voting.  Don’t think that RTS is only used to make an appointment to testify in person at a committee hearing at the Capitol.  It is also the best way – in addition to calling and emailing your lawmakers – to weigh in on specific bills using a simple “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” method. Once logged in to the RTS system, click on "My Bill Position" in the left menu and enter the bill number when prompted. Once you're signed up, you can use your email/password for RTS  for years to come.
