From End of Life Washington:
It is with great excitement that End of Life Washington announces a moment to celebrate in our progress toward integrating Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) into healthcare. On March 28th, Governor Inslee signed the 2023-2025 Supplemental Operating Budget and as part of the supplemental budget, and End of Life Washington is receiving $250,000. This allows End of Life Washington to continue to improve access to end-of-life care.
End of Life Washington sought this funding to educate and train supportive medical systems, particularly hospices, to provide direct MAiD services to patients. Fewer than 27% of Advance Practice Providers (APPs) in Washington State reported are currently knowledgeable about how to support patients accessing the DWD Act. This funding will allow us to continue supporting and training hospices and medical professionals. It allows for the continuation of the Medical Director position and provides care to patients who do not have supportive healthcare providers.
End of Life Washington thanks Representatives Strom Peterson and Skyler Rude, Senators Kevin Van De Wege, and June Robinson, and all their aides. Their willingness to hear the story of End of Life Washington, understand the critical importance of access to the Death with Dignity Act, and support the legislative process made us very proud to have these leaders serving the State of Washington.
Because of the efforts of so many, and the generosity of the State of Washington, End of Life Washington can continue our efforts to integrate Medical Aid in Dying into mainstream healthcare, furthering the goal that ALL Washingtonians can access their rights to excellent and supportive end-of-life care. We hope you will join us in this moment of celebration.
